- What is DSIP?
- DSIP, delta sleep-inducing peptide, is a nine-amino-acid peptide isolated in 1977 from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in induced slow-wave sleep. It is named for the delta-wave EEG pattern it produced, and has been studied since for effects on sleep, stress hormones, pain and withdrawal. Its receptor and endogenous origin remain unknown.
- What does the research on DSIP actually show?
- An inconsistent increase in slow-wave sleep in animal studies, small 1980s human trials reporting improved sleep in chronic insomniacs but no effect in healthy volunteers, and scattered findings in withdrawal, pain and stress models that were never replicated. A 2006 review called it a still unresolved riddle.
- What is the half-life of DSIP?
- Short. Plasma half-lives reported in the older literature range from a few minutes to about a quarter of an hour, with a protein-bound fraction that persists longer. Effects on sleep in the positive studies lasted well beyond that, which is attributed to a triggered process rather than to circulating peptide.
- How was DSIP dosed in studies?
- Human studies used 25 nanomoles per kilogram, about 21 µg/kg, given intravenously as single infusions or short evening courses. Animal studies used nanomole-per-kilogram intravenous doses or intracerebroventricular administration. There is no validated human dose and no data on the subcutaneous route; this page does not recommend one, and the material sold here is for research use only.
- What side effects does DSIP research report?
- The 1980s trials reported no serious adverse events, no sedation and no dependence. Those trials were small and old, and there is no modern safety data or data on repeated subcutaneous use. Theoretical concerns include effects on pituitary hormone release and additive effects with sedatives. The FDA declined to permit it in compounded medicines in 2023.
- Is DSIP legal in Canada?
- DSIP is not a controlled substance in Canada, but it has no Health Canada approval for human use and no DIN. It may be sold for laboratory research, which is how it is sold here. It is not named on the WADA Prohibited List.
- Is DSIP a sedative?
- Not in the way the literature describes it. The positive studies reported a shift toward slow-wave sleep and normalised sleep structure without the hangover or REM suppression of hypnotics, and effects that depended on time of day. Investigators framed it as a sleep modulator rather than a sleep inducer, which is also why single doses in healthy people often showed nothing.
